Tamarin Bay has no barrier reef in front of it, so swells roll straight into the bay. Local surf schools offer lessons on the sandy bottom near the river mouth. In the southern winter (April–September) the bay and the reef breaks nearby get serious waves for experienced surfers only.

In November–December the waves are usually small and friendly: perfect for a first lesson.
