The British built five Martello towers along the west coast in the 1830s, fearing a French attempt to retake the island (and a slave revolt around the abolition of slavery). The La Preneuse tower is the best preserved: thick basalt walls, a cannon on the roof and a small museum about the island's colonial and military history.
