Whale watching (July–October)

From July to October, humpback whales migrate past the west coast with their calves. Not possible during our trip, but a highlight of the winter season.

Humpback whales come to the warm waters off Mauritius from July to October to give birth and raise their calves; sperm whales live off the west coast all year but are harder to see. Licensed operators from Tamarin and Black River take small groups out to watch them from the boat.

Swimming with whales is forbidden in Mauritius; responsible operators keep their distance and switch off engines.

  • 🚕 Taxi from the villa: about Rs 350–500 one way per car (agree the price first; a return trip with waiting time is often negotiable).
  • 🚲 Bike: close enough to cycle along the coast road (take care with traffic).

📅 Booking: Book with a licensed operator; avoid anyone offering to swim with whales (illegal).
