The road from Chamarel up to Plaine Champagne and across to Grand Bassin crosses the heart of the Black River Gorges National Park. Along the way: the Chamarel viewpoint, the Black River Gorges viewpoint over the deep green valley, Alexandra Falls, macaques by the road, and finally the sacred lake of Grand Bassin.
Do it as a slow drive with stops (2–3 hours), or as the backbone of a plateau day with a hike or lunch in Chamarel.
