Macchabée viewpoint from Black River

A steep climb from the Black River entrance up the gorge to the Macchabée viewpoint, the classic panorama of the national park.

From the Black River visitor centre, the Macchabée trail climbs the escarpment through native forest to the Macchabée viewpoint, where the whole gorge opens below you down to Tamarin and the sea, with the Tourelle du Tamarin on the horizon.

It's a proper workout from this side (4–5 hours return). The same viewpoint is an easy detour from Pétrin, on the Macchabée forest loop.

📍 Where it starts
At the Black River visitor centre, the park's west entrance, 15 minutes from the villa: follow the signs from Grande Rivière Noire village up the valley road to the car park (free, with toilets and a map board).
🧭 The route
Up the valley, then a long, steep climb through forest on a rooty path to the edge of the plateau and the viewpoint. Back the same way (or down the Colophanes trail with a map).

Steep, rooty forest path; muddy after rain.

The big view is at the end; a few openings on the way up.

Loop possible with the Colophanes trail (ask the rangers for the map).
