Captain Matthew Flinders, the first to circumnavigate Australia, stopped in Mauritius in 1803 on his way home, not knowing Britain and France were at war again. The French governor held him for six and a half years. The monument stands on the coast road near Baie du Cap, by the MacondΓ© viewpoint.
