Father Laval, a French missionary who worked with the freed slaves in the 1840s–1860s, is venerated by Mauritians of every religion. His tomb in the church of Sainte-Croix, on the edge of Port Louis, draws a steady stream of visitors and a huge pilgrimage on 8–9 September.
