Housed in the Beau Plan sugar factory (closed in 1999), L'Aventure du Sucre explains how sugarcane shaped the island's history, economy and people: the Dutch, the French plantations and slavery, the Indian indentured labourers, and modern Mauritius. Interactive displays and the old machinery make it engaging even for non-museum people.
It ends with a tasting of unrefined sugars and rums. The Le Fangourin restaurant serves good Creole-modern food.
